Fillings
Dental fillings are used to seal the structure of a damaged tooth. Dentists will use a dental restorative material to secure and restore the functionality and structure of the damaged tooth. Damage to teeth can occur for a variety of reasons including sporting injuries or physical damage, poor oral hygiene, and tooth decay.
In the past, it has been common to use a variety of metal alloys as a filling material which can sometimes include cobalt, chrome, nickel, silver amalgam, mercury, tin, and sometimes copper. This is now a very outdated practice due to the toxicity of some of these substances.
Alternative techniques include glass and ceramic fillings which are fabricated to match the colour of surrounding teeth. Sydney Smiles Dental uses high-quality restorative material for oral dentistry known as composite resin that is safe for oral treatment and is also easily colour matched with surrounding teeth.
Crowns
A dental crown is a type of dental restoration that completely caps the tooth. A crown is usually needed when the integrity of a tooth is compromised as a result of a large cavity or as a result of a tooth undergoing Root Canal Therapy.
Crowns are often used to improve the strength or appearance of teeth. These can be indirectly fabricated from many materials including full gold (metal alloy), porcelain fused to metal or zirconia, or in the correct situation porcelain alone, then cemented onto your natural tooth structure.
Bridges
A dental bridge is a dental restoration used to replace a missing tooth by permanently joining to adjacent teeth or dental implants.
A bridge is indirectly fabricated in a dental laboratory after taking impressions of prepared teeth adjacent to the missing tooth or teeth. The materials used for the bridges include full gold (metal alloy), porcelain fused to metal, or porcelain.
